Nine from county at All-Star game - Wednesday, June 17, 2009
MARQUETTE—Iron County will be represented by nine players—three from West Iron County and six from Forest Park—during the 2009 U.P. Football All-Star Game, which will be played this Saturday, June 20, at the Superior Dome here.
The game starts at 3 p.m. EDT (2 Central Time), with doors opening an hour before the game. WLUC TV will broadcast the game on a tape-delay basis on a date to be announced.
The Wykons, who reached the regional finals in Division 7 last fall, will be represented by Jeff O’Claire, Zac Kolbas and Scott Kataja.
Forest Park reached the state championship game in Division 8 last fall, and the Trojans playing in the All-Star Game are Bob Reid, Jeff Sartori, Jim Wheeler, Marcus Smithson, Ed Zarn and Jake Jacobson.
All the Iron County players will be playing for the West team, which will be coached by Iron Mountain’s Scott Boddy. He will be assisted by Andy Crouch (Lake Linden-Hubbell), John Croze (Calumet), George Twardzik (Calumet), Joe Reddinger (North Dickinson) and Don Sawaski (Houghton).
All players taking part in the game were seniors last fall and have now graduated from high school.
The week’s events include a charity golf event on June 14; player check-in and a food drive on June 15; team and individual pictures on June 16; the players’ skills challenge on June 17; an all-star reception on June 18; a youth football camp on June 19; a recruiting combine on June 20.
The youth camp is for players in first through eighth grade. Camp instructors will be the 2009 All-Star players, who will teach blocking, catching, running and throwing. No pre-registration is necessary; register at the dome. The fee is $10.
The recruiting combine, on the morning of the game, is for any player in ninth through 12th grade this fall. All athletes will be tested for speed, strength and agility, with results sent to colleges across the country. Registration must be done online at www.xcelsportstraining.net (follow links to the U.P. All-Star game).
