Wykons, Trojans get ready for season’s start this week

IRON RIVER—During his many years as assistant coach, Dave Graff was renowned for his halftime adjustments that turned the tide in tough times for Forest Park’s football team.
Now, in his first year as head coach, Graff has to make just such an adjustment before the season even kicks off.

 
Wykons tie K’fd in tennis opener

IRON RIVER—Last week’s cloudy, murky weather didn’t do West Iron’s girls tennis team much good. Of three matches on their schedule, two of them were lost due to the weather (Aug. 20 at Ishpeming; Aug. 22, home vs. Negaunee).

 
WIC spikers start new year

IRON RIVER—Even if it was little more than a glorified scrimmage, West Iron’s volleyball team got its season started Aug. 23 at the Wykon Invitational here.
Seven teams took part in the round robin, playing two 21-point matches against the others. When it was over, L’Anse and Stephenson tied for first place with 10-2 records, but the Purple Hornets took home the trophy—they beat the Eagles in both their head-to-head matches.

 
FP reaches semis at Flivver Invite

CRYSTAL FALLS—Forest Park’s girls volleyball team saw its  first action of the season Aug. 23 when the Trojans took part in the Kingsford Invitational.
The team finished with a 2-2-1 record overall, losing to Kingsford in three sets in the semifinals. The Flivvers won 24-22, 17-21, 17-15.

New training rules take effect for grid practices

IRON COUNTY—As a new season of high school football begins, coaches and players alike will be adapting to new practice policies instituted by the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
The new rules are intended to limit helmet-to-helmet contact during practices and help players acclimate themselves to possible hot August weather.

Fast-Air wins hoops title

IRON RIVER—Fast-Air defeated Nelson Timberridge Forest 67-30 Aug. 6 in the championship game of the Bachman Park Summer League tournament.
Fast Air was the regular season champions, and Nelson finished in second place, according to league sources.
