IRON RIVER--Rick Kent, a resident of Iron County and a member of the Iron River Writers Guild, recently received notification of his third place prize in the prestigious Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition. It is considered the premier short story competition in the country.

Jamey McCole of Crystal Falls brought in this 23 ½-inch walleye just before the 8 p.m. deadline. AMASA—Ice fisherman from throughout Iron County brought entries to Trappers Lane Jan. 12 as part of Amasa’s fundraiser for its 125th birthday celebration. The chili feed featured silent auctions and raffles, and organizers held the ice fishing contest as part of the fundraising event.

BATES TOWNSHIP—Trustees here voted Jan. 9 to update the township garage, which has been without heat for nearly two weeks, Supervisor Grant Helgemo said. The heater is outdated and noisy, Helgemo told supervisors during the monthly meeting. Some circuit boards in the controller are obsolete.
