IRON RIVER — The West Iron boys tennis program won its second match of the season by defeating Gwinn 6–0 May 1. The team followed up their opening season victory over Escanaba April 23 with a near perfect contest which saw them only lose three games in the entire contest.

Although Gwinn was not able to field a full team and forfeited three of their doubles matches, every singles match saw West Iron strongly defeat their opponent.

Caleb Strom, Dominick Brunswick, James White and Matthew Swenski all had victories in singles play.

“The guys showed a lot of class and maturity at this meet,” said Coach Jim Anderson. “Everyone played with patience and confidence and demonstrated good sportsmanship. They were able to pick their shots and move their opponents around to open up the court.”
Playing at first doubles, West Iron’s Colton Holm and Drew Alexa won 6–0, 6–0. The impressive duo did not surrender a game and looked strong in their victory.

“Wins early in the season are always good confidence builders, especially for our younger players,” Anderson said. “I’m happy with how they are developing their games.”

In only his second year coaching, the team is growing in size with over 20 athletes choosing to be part of the program. Anderson is developing a culture that draws athletes to the courts.

Junior Elijah Oberlin effusively spoke about the experience: “It’s really fun and it’s a great environment. Everyone wants to be there and it’s really enjoyable to play.”
