CRYSTAL FALLS – Eastland: The Shipwreck that Shook America, a documentary about one of America’s worst maritime tragedies, will be shown at the Crystal Theatre Sunday, July 23 at 7 p.m.
Harvey Moshman, executive producer of the 2019 film, will be present to introduce it and to respond to questions.
The SS Eastland was a passenger steamer based in Chicago and used for tourist excursions on the Great Lakes. On July 24, 1915, the ship rolled over onto its side while tied to a dock in the Chicago River. In total, 844 passengers and crew were killed in what was the largest loss of life from a single shipwreck on the Great Lakes. Although more people died in this tragedy than on the Titanic and the Lusitania, little has been written about it.
According to Moshman, Eastland combines story lines of immigrant exploitation, greed, corruption and cover-up. It features rare, previously censored newsreel footage. Admission is by donation.
