IRON RIVER — Here’s what our local community has to say in response to Nick Baumgartner’s outstanding performance at the Olympics in Beijing:
Stacy Sucholl
“The whole UP is backing him up and we are all just really proud of him. Iron River community is embracing his journey. I was so excited to watch him! I was cheering when I was watching!”
Mary (Nick’s Mother)
“I’m just very proud of that man. I’m very proud of the type of person he is. He is an excellent athlete and he has shown the world that Yoopers are a force!”
Jason Smedlund (Young’s)
“We are super proud and lucky to call him a part of our community and we wish him luck in his next race on Friday! Regardless of outcome we are proud that he is Yooper!”
Denise Maloney
“He makes us proud! He is a great role model, and his work ethic, grit and determination are a great example for young people everywhere! We are proud to call him ours!” He doesn’t quit and we could all take a page out of his book.”
Punner Franzene (U.P. Riverland Realty)
“Success is at your reach, don’t look back – look up and forward! Embrace future opportunities – we will have your back!”
Jeff Ofsdahl
“I just think its unbelievable someone from a small area like Iron County could put so much time and dedication into his craft and become a 4-time Olympian. He had such good determination you could see it in his eyes. Everybody I talked to is just super proud. And if he is going to do it at 44 that will be neat to see!”
Jessica Polich (Ski Brule)
“So much to say. He started working here when he was 14 and I’ve got to watch him grow into the athlete that he is today with a dream that he has fulfilled more than once! Nick isn’t just an amazing athlete, but he is just downright kind. He inspires people to get off the couch and go after what they want. In fact, my son and I were watching some videos of him on YouTube and my son  said, ‘I want to go outside!’ and the first thing he does is start doing tricks! Nick makes us Yooper proud having been born here and continues to reside here instead of moving off to the mountains to train. Saying I’m proud of Nick is an understatement. He is just an amazing athlete and person all around.”
