Former Amasa resident celebrates 100th birthday

Peru, Ill. – Donald (Don) Johnson former long-time resident of Iron County, Michigan celebrated 100 years on this earth, Nov. 6.  
He celebrated with family, friends, good food, refreshments and karaoke, featuring Don playing the spoons.  Don was accompanied by his four daughters:  Donelle (Stephen Summerville, deceased), Diane (Charles) Peterson, Dorie and Debby (Steven) Phelps.  Also present were his granddaughter, Annaliese Peterson, other relatives and many friends.
     Don, his late wife, Ruth (Maki), and their daughters all attended Amasa High School. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Don and his family returned to Amasa.  He was then employed by the MA Hannah Company in the local underground iron mines.
    In 1974 a job transfer took Don and his family to Peru, Ill. where he has since resided.  
    Don continues his membership at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Peru. 
    The annual church Senior Citizens’ Luncheon in October honored him with a 100th birthday cake. 
    He was also honored with a letter from President Biden, a photograph on The Today’s Show Smuckers’ jar, and many, many cards from all over the country.
