28 years of Great Eight Winter Games

UPPER PENINSULA – Great Eight committee members from Florence, Forest Park, Iron Mountain, Kingsford, Niagara, North Dickinson, Norway-Vulcan and West Iron Co. have joined to coordinate the 28th Great Eight Winter Games for the 4th through 8th grade students at their school districts.
     The games are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18 with the Opening Ceremony kicking off the Winter Games at 8:30 a.m. in the Kingsford Middle School Gymnasium. Winter Olympics Gold and Silver Medalist Nick Baumgartner will be the keynote speaker. The school flags will be paraded and the Winter Games torch will be lit. Competition will follow the opening ceremony at various locations in Iron Mountain, Kingsford, Norway, Niagara and Florence.
     Fourth through eighth grade students from the participating school districts can compete in archery, bowling, chess, giant slalom skiing, snowboarding, cross country skiing or snowshoeing. There is boys’ and girls’ basketball for 4 and 5 graders and 6, 7 and 8 graders can participate in girls’ volleyball or boys’ dodgeball. 
Students can participate in one event and can enter by completing the form that is available in their school office.
Winter Games shirts may be ordered by completing an order form and returning it to your school with payment by Wednesday, Feb. 1. Short sleeve t-shirts are $10, long sleeve t-shirts are $17 and hooded sweatshirts are $25.
