IRON RIVER — Until Covid-19 hit, the Relay for Life had become an important event in the annual summer schedule in Iron County. While hopes remain to return to the annual schedule, what was going to be the sixth annual event to raise funds for the American Cancer Society has been cancelled for the second consecutive summer.
“Here we are at another crossroads concerning the Relay for Life event as we have known it,” said Relay Committee member Chris Shamion. “We continue to have concerns for our local businesses, as many still have ongoing difficulties (as) a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.”
“Even some of our ideas could not be implemented last year because of restrictions.”
The Relay was also cancelled in the summer of 2020.
One event that is still on is the bike ride. This year’s ride will take place on June 11, with check-in at 7:30 a.m. at the Klint Safford RV Park. The riders, who will be on the road by 8 a.m., will embark on a 22-mile journey to be done “in honor of, in memory of, and for encouragement to those who have had to deal with cancer,” Shamion said.
“And always we make this effort in the hope for new procedures and cures.”
Shamion said teams have signed up for the ride. She added that additional events are being planned to raise funds.
Shamion said those who make yearly contributions in memory of, or in tribute to someone special, or “even just from a compassionate heart and a desire for better treatment and the hope for a cure” can send contributions to:
Kathy Holm – Relay for Life
    1606 Davidson St
    Iron River, MI 49935
or Shamco – Relay for Life
    PO Box 436
    Iron River, MI 49935
“So big or small, may all our donations and funds raised lead to victories in the battle against cancer.”
