Ellie comes home

CASPIAN — On May 8, 7-year-old Ellie Mitchem was finally able to return home following a sledding accident in March.
    After 17 surgeries during which surgeons attempted to save Ellie’s right leg, an 18th surgery removed the injured lower portion of her limb.
    To celebrate Ellie’s return and express support following her and her family’s harrowing ordeal, residents from throughout Iron County greeted Ellie by standing outside along Caspian Avenue with signs of encouragement.
    Ellie’s mom, Brianna Mitchem, said that while the experience has been hard on her daughter, Ellie looked forward to returning to school and is “learning to be OK” with her new circumstances.
    Mitchem also expressed immense gratitude for the community’s support.
