IRON COUNTY— Over 1 million anglers fish through the ice each winter in Michigan. Ice fishing offers a good winter recreational opportunity for all ages, whether setting out tip-ups for the day or putting out a shanty for the season.
Two days twice a year, families and friends can enjoy one of Michigan’s premiere outdoor activities, Michigan Fishing, for free.
The 2023 Free Fishing Weekends are scheduled for winter: Feb. 18- 19, and summer: June 10- 11.
All fishing license fees will be waived for two days. A Recreation Passport will not be required for entry into state parks and recreation areas during Free Fishing Weekend. Residents and out-of-state visitors may enjoy fishing on both inland and Great Lakes’ waters for all species of fish. All fishing regulations will still apply.
Many locations around the state hold fun events during the weekend. Check back each year for events happening locally.
Want to know when future Free Fishing Weekends will be? The winter weekend is always the Saturday and Sunday of President’s Day Weekend and the summer weekend is always the Saturday and Sunday following the first full week of June.
For many, the annual Free Fishing Weekend has become a tradition - a time to get together and have some fishing fun. While some may find time to reflect while fishing, there are no limits to variations on a great theme. Experienced anglers who offer a child or young adult the chance to take their first fishing trip can provide a rewarding experience for all.
Michigan offers some of the finest freshwater fishing in the world, with more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, more than 11,000 inland lakes and tens of thousands of miles of rivers and streams.
During the two days, all fishing license fees will be waived for residents and out-of-state visitors alike on both inland and Great Lakes waters. All fishing regulations still apply.
Iron County has ample natural opportunity, so hook up with family and friends and enjoy a day on the ice.
