IRON RIVER — Frank E. Guzowski, age 95, a lifelong resident of Iron River, passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2020, at Aspirus Iron River Hospital. Frank was born on Feb. 28, 1925, in Iron River, the son of the late John and Helen (Lojewski) Guzowski. He attended the Iron River schools, graduating with the class of 1943.

Frank entered the U.S. Army on July 12, 1943, serving in the H.Q. Harbor Craft Company. Starting his overseas service in Southampton,England and ending in Bremerhaven, Germany, Frank served at the Battle of the Bulge and received the ETO medal, Good Conduct medal, and the Meritorious Unit Award. He was honorably discharged on March 28, 1946, at Camp McCoy, Wis.

Frank started his civilian career as a car mechanic with his brother Zigmund and later at the Tegge Garage. Afterward, Frank worked as a skilled machinist in the iron mines for the M.A. Hanna Mining Company. He worked at the Cannon, Homer-Wauseca and Sherwood Mines and fi nally at the Groveland Mine, where he attained the position of foreman. He also mined borax in Death Valley and nickel in Columbia, South America.

He was a member of Saint Agnes Catholic Church in Iron River, the Iron River Knights of Columbus Council 2300, participating in their annual Tootsie Roll Drive, and the American Legion Alfred Branchini Post No.17. In his early years, Frank participated in the Ritual Precision Drill Team initiation ceremonies and competitions. Throughout his life, his aptitude for mechanics molded his most enjoyable pastime activity: fi xing things. He also gardened.

Frank married Mary Cindrich on June 17, 1950, at the Assumption Catholic Church in Iron River. The couple made their home in Iron River and celebrated their 69th anniversary in 2019. Where his purpose came from work, his happiness came from his marriage to Mary. They were constant companions and on the streets of Iron River, where you saw Mary, you saw Frank close at her side.

Frank is survived by his wife, Mary; their two sons, John Guzowski (Jean) of Menasha, Wis. and Frank Guzowski, MD (Kathryn) of Marshfi eld, Wis.; one grandson, Nicholas; one granddaughter, Walker; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jean Snow; and brothers, Zigmund, Stanley and Tony Guzowski.

His final days were comforted by two special nieces, Jean Ann Lundin and Marian Novak, to whom he was especially grateful.

Private services will be held with Fr. Gregory Veneklase presiding.

Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery. The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites at the graveside.
