CASPIAN — The Duke of Abruzzi Society’s store opening at will be held Wednesday, May 26.
The store will be open Wednesday-Saturday throughout the summer, rain or shine. Hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Follow the yellow signs on U.S. 2, M-189 and County Road 424 to the “Biggest Little Garage Sale in the U.P.”
Donations will be taken at the door in the entryway, all day, every day.
The Duke of Abruzzi Society building was built in 1914 and was designated as a historical site in 1968. It was built by Italian Immigrants who came to this land to create a new life for themselves and their families. It quickly became a hub of social activity in the community and was used for weddings, wakes, meetings, and social events of all kinds.
“It is what made the entire community a family,” said Bob Ketchum of the Society. “We want to restore the building and help bring that sense of family back to the community once again. We owe it to those who have yet to come like those who had the foresight to build it for us. It is not only a way of paying back it but also of paying it forward.
“We also intend to add a community park on the grounds. It will be a quiet green space among the few remaining elm trees left in the U.P.
Use of the bocce courts will also be provided to the public on days not scheduled for league play.
