IRON MOUNTAIN/CRYSTAL FALLS — The 41st Circuit Court judges announced the appointment of Chad DeRouin as the next Iron County prosecuting attorney, effective May 28.
DeRouin will succeed Melissa Powell, who has taken a position in the Prosecutor’s Office in Muskegon County. Powell was initially appointed as Iron County prosecutor in 2006.
DeRouin is currently the chief assistant prosecuting attorney in Oceana County and has held that position for over four years. He is also a veteran of the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 2006.
According to a release sent out by the 41st Circuit Court, DeRouin has handled many misdemeanors, felonies, criminal jury trials, juvenile delinquency matters as well as child protection cases.
“I would like to thank Judge Barglind and Judge Ninomiya for giving me the opportunity to become the next prosecuting attorney of Iron County,” DeRouin said. “I look forward to serving the county’s residents.”
The release stated that judges interviewed several “extremely qualified” candidates for the position.
State law requires that the Circuit Court judges select the replacement when there is a vacancy in the office of prosecuting attorney.
