IRON RIVER — Rockin Robins is an intergenerational outdoor education program held at Covenant Point Bible Camp for the last 20 years. For three Fridays after school in the spring, kindergartners and first graders known as little buddies are paired with adult big buddies. Transportation and snacks are included. The program has space for 20 little buddies each session.
A host of interactive projects and activities conducted by Point staff are enjoyed together in big and small groups. Some of these in the past have been making nature journals, flower presses, bird houses or feeders, gnome homes and bug boxes, using binoculars, exploring the woods and forest floor, collecting natural items for making various items, learning about life in a vernal pond, playing nature games, and dissecting owl pellets.
Children also learn bird calls and listen to nature stories that may include songs and a chance to view nests, feathers and tree cookies.
Rockin Robins was started in 1999 by Chrissy Larson, who was hired as nature director to develop outdoor education programs for schools. In 2003, Linnea Johnson, who is now a teacher at West Iron County Schools, took over this position and then Jane Frasier stepped in from 2006 - 2019.         This year, Maggie Schaeffer was in charge. Rockin went virtual for two years in 2020 and 2021. Although a wider audience was able to enjoy learning about the woods and lake life in the U.P., being back in person together has been a wonderful experience for both young and the not so young.
“A special thank you to all the big buddies in our community who have volunteered during the last 20 years,” said Fraiser.
