GOGEBIC COUNTY — Road work began July 25 on roughly 13 miles of Hwy M-28 in Gogebic and Ontonagon counties. Work is expected to continue through September.
The Michigan Department of Transportation is spending $3 million on the stretch of highway between Old M-28 and Hwy M-64 and the project is expected to support 38 jobs.
The work will include asphalt cold milling and resurfacing, shoulder-widening, aggregate shoulders, concrete curb and gutter, and pavement markings. Motorists should expect intermittent single-lane closures, with traffic regulators present during the project.
“This work will extend the lifespan of the roadway and result in a smoother driving surface and increased safety for motorists,” read a profile of the project supplied by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s office.
The project falls under the umbrella of Whitmer’s “Building Michigan Together” plan that is projected, by the end of 2022, to have funded 16,000 lane miles of road and over 12,000 bridges, creating an estimated 89,000 jobs. According to the Governor’s Office, this equates to a 70% increase in spending on road infrastructure compared to the previous four years.
