IRON RIVER – The Lady Wykons dropped their final contest prior to the new year, losing to Dollar Bay 48-42 on Wednesday, Dec. 21.
“Dollar Bay played a 1-2-2 zone defense and we struggled to hit shots from the outside,” stated Coach Eric Shamion.
A pattern is emerging for the Lady Wykons. Every game is exciting, every game is close and every game comes down to the last quarter of play. In four of their six games this season, the difference has been less than 10 points. The Lady Wykons are showing they can compete and Coach Shamion has them in every game. The Wykons got out to a quick start leading 12 to 10 after the first quarter as the team sank two three pointers, was four for four from the free throw line and Calli Pellizer scored on a beautiful two-point shot. In a challenging second quarter Dollar Bay outscored West Iron 18 to 7 and the halftime score saw Dollar Bay up by 8, 37 to 29.
For each of the final quarters, the Wykons outscored their opponent, but could not overcome the 11-point halftime deficit. West Iron’s success rests with its ability to shoot from the outside and Dollar Bay’s defense made it difficult to get open shots.
Gritty as always, the girls made a final effort to bring the game to within two points with two minutes remaining. Unfor-tunately, that is as close as the game would get as the Blue Bolts fought off the comeback and the Wykons went home for the holiday with a record of three wins and three losses on the season.
Seanna Stine once again showed she can sink the three-point shot, hitting one in each of the four quarters and finishing with twelve points. Showing the depth of the bench, eight players scored at least one basket for the Wykons, while only five did so for Dollar Bay.
Next up for the Lady Wykons are games at Kingsford on Jan. 3 and at Forest Park on Jan. 6.
