CRYSTAL FALLS – Igor Yuzov and Russian friends are bringing “Siberian Surf Rock” to Crystal Theatre Sunday, Oct, 1 at 7 p.m.
According to Yuzov, “Siberian Surf Rock” features humorous lyrics and grooves that tempt audiences to get up and dance. The backstory of the group is as fascinating as the unique musical label.
Born in Germany and raised in Ukraine, Igor Yuzov grew up in the former Soviet Union, where folk music was the norm but rock ‘n roll was illegal. When it became possible, the rebellious lad emigrated to the USA with his “Folk ‘n Roll” band called Limpopo.
In 1993, Limpopo won Ed McMahon’s Star Search and their popularity began to blossom. Yuzov claims that Elvis Presley came to him in a dream telling him to start playing rock ‘n roll.
The Limpopo band, who became known as the Red Elvises, gave street performances on Santa Monica’s 3rd Street Promenade. When the large crowds they attracted caused congestion, they were forced to move elsewhere. Over the past 20 years, the Red Elvises have toured all over the world, taking breaks to record new music and participate in film and television projects.
Advanced tickets for the event may be purchased online at thecrystaltheatre.org, by phone at 906-875-3208, or in person at Stage Left  Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.- noon.
