IRON RIVER - The West Iron District Library (WIDL) announces the Food for Fines program which allows library patrons to pay off fines with food and toiletry donations through the month of November. Last year, the WIDL collected over 50 pounds of non-perishable food and toiletry items which were donated to a local food pantry. “Overdue fines can add up for families, so offering a way to clear those up during a season of thankfulness and generosity helps not only our library patrons, but the community as well.” noted WIDL director, Stephanie Swenski. “One donated item will forgive $2 worth of overdue fines and patrons are welcome to bring in as many items as needed to clear their fines.”
Food for Fines will run through the entire month of November, but patrons aren’t limited to non-perishable foods. Toiletry items such as shampoo, deodorant and toothpaste are also happily accepted and always needed. All items will be donated to a local food pantry. Please note that expired food donations will not be accepted; donations cannot be used for charges from lost or damaged materials.
