To the editor:
For many years Memorial/Decoration Day was held on May 30th, then in 1971 Congress changed it like other holidays to a Monday, so they could have a three-day weekend with pay. When this happened, Memorial Day became the opening day of summer. A day for picnics, BBQs, the beach, etc., not just a day to remember and honor those who gave their lives for our country.
So, this Memorial Day which will be held on Monday, May 29 let us take a little time to remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep us free.
