IRON RIVER — The Lady Wykons continue to give West Iron and the community a reason to cheer. The girls looked impressive in a recent victory against Kingsford, 63–51, and are looking like they could make a run in the state tournament given the right circumstances.
The game was the second of two games versus the Flivvers this season. The first game was a low scoring 39 to 28 victory for the Wykons following an away game on Jan. 3, and the rematch on Jan. 30 showed just how much the team has grown this year. Four Wykons scored in double digits and nine players contributed at least one basket.
In one of the most impressive offensive performances in recent history, the Wykons put up 63 points, including 23 in the fourth quarter when the game was on the line.
“I think the kids enjoyed it and I hope the fans enjoyed it because it was fun to watch,” said Coach Eric Shamion.
The Wykons are a team that knows how to close out a game and play their best when the game is on the line.
“[Kingsford] made a few runs at us, but each time our kids responded with a well-timed bucket,” Shamion said.
Initially the game appeared to be an easy victory for the Wykons, who outscored the Flivvers 13–7 in the first quarter. Kingsford then found its shot and pushed back into the contest, outscoring West Iron 18–14 in the second quarter to put the game at 27–25 at halftime.
The second-half score was tight until the fourth quarter, when Danica Shamion put up 12 points and an impressive five additional Wykons scored at least one basket.
The girls closed the door on a potential Flivver comeback and put another win in the scorebook.
Danica Shamion was the lead scorer for the Wykons with 21 points, Seanna Stine finished with 11 and Carli Guzowski and Kali Harty each contributed 10 points to the winning effort.
