IRON MOUNTAIN — For the second game in a row, the Wykon football team played its heart out only to be shut out. On Sept. 22 the Wykons took on undefeated Iron Mountain. Entering the game with five wins this season, the Mountaineers were looking like the team to beat, with no reason for its fans to doubt a great October ahead.
The Wykons have worked hard to piece their football program back together, but a number of the team’s players are injured and coach Mike Berutti has been forced to fill holes with players who have little experience. Entering the game with one win on the season, the Wykons knew the game would be a challenge and appeared anxious as the game began.
The Wykons fumbled twice early in the first quarter and fell behind quickly. The second of two fumbled snaps was lost to Iron Mountain, who capitalized by going up 7–0. Halftime saw the Wykons down 43–0. The Mountaineers subbed generously, adding only one touchdown to their lead in the second half. As the game ended, the scoreboard read Iron Mountain 49 West Iron 0.
Berutti was classy in defeat, complimenting the Wykons’ opponent.
“Congrats to Iron Mountain,” he said. “They play hard, they’re fast, they’re a good football team.”
