IRON RIVER — A 90-minute program to explore trends and research related to short-term rentals will be held at the West Iron District Library on May 29 from 6–8 p.m. The session will also feature an overview of various policy approaches, regulatory tools, enforcement and court cases related to STRs.

STRs are probably better known colloquially as AirBnBs, though rentals like this are also available for rent via other internet platforms like Vrbo. STRs often come under fire as the culprits behind everything from the loss of local affordable housing to generating excessive noise and traffic. Tourists often prefer them to hotels, particularly for longer trips, because they offer more space and privacy.

The session is one of four in the Western U.P., with others in Ontonagon, Houghton and Marquette. All sessions are put on through a partnership between Western UP Planning and Development region and Michigan State University Extension.

Attendees must RSVP by registering. The general cost of admission is $30; a reduced fee of $20 is available for master citizen planners. Registration is available at events.anr.msu.edu/STRwestUP. Questions can be directed to Will Cronin at 906-281-7270 or croninwi@msu.edu.
