Two-car crash leaves one man dead

BATES TOWNSHIP — A 29-year-old Iron River man, Robert Trotta, is dead after a two-vehicle collision occurred on March 2 around 2:30 p.m.
According to Michigan State Police, Trotta’s 2003 BMW was traveling eastbound on US-2 when it crossed the centerline, striking a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox head on near Bates-Gaastra Road in Bates Township.
Trotta was pronounced dead at the scene. With him in the vehicle was his three-year-old daughter, who was treated and released from Aspirus Hospital in Iron River.
The driver of the Equinox was air-lifted to Aspirus Hospital in Wausau, Wisconsin for further treatment. The passenger in that vehicle was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Aspirus in Iron River.
MSP troopers were assisted at the scene by the Iron County Sheriff’s Office, Iron River Police Department, Caspian Police Department, Crystal Falls Police Department, conservation officers and firefighters from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the West Iron County Fire Department, Iron County Search and Rescue, the Iron County Road Commission and Northland Towing. 
The crash remains under investigation. Giannunzio said toxicology reports may take a few weeks.
