ESCANABA — A pair of Iron River doubles teams brought home championships from the Michigan-Wisconsin Open tennis tournament held Aug. 1-2 at Royce Park in Escanaba.
Livea Mazurek and Katarina Serbentas won the women’s B division by edging Jillian Skewis and Morgan Carlson of Negaunee 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 10-7 as the third set went to a super tiebreaker.
Mazurek, a senior-to-be at West Iron County, is expected to be the Wykons’ No. 1 singles player this season, while Serbentas is a 2019 graduate of West Iron who is currently playing a top singles spot at Division 3 Webster University near St. Louis.
In the men’s B division, Holden Ross and Rich Junak rolled over Dan Skewis and Luke Skewis 6-2, 6-2. Ross will be a senior on the West Iron boys team this spring. Junak is Ross’ grandfather.
According to the Escanaba Daily Press, 42 players entered the 73rd annual tournament.
