IRON RIVER — As a standout golfer, West Iron senior Nathan Thomson has produced many special shots during his prep career -- but none like the one he had on April 30 at Oak Crest Golf Course in Norway.
Thomson carded a hole-in-one on the par 4 301-yard second hole on his way to taking medalist honors with a 73. The odds of recording a hole-in-one on a par 4? Six million to one, according to the Double Eagle Club, the worldwide registry for double eagles carded.
Thomson ended up two strokes in front of runners-up Jeff VanHolla of Norway and Tyler Annala of Westwood.
Norway won the team title with a 323, followed by Houghton seven shots back at 330. West Iron did not have enough golfers to compete in the team standings.
Forest Park wound up with a 445, good for 11th in the 12-team field. Hunter Loehr paced the Trojans with a 101, followed by Ethan Kopf (106), Brad Stacy (115) and Gabe Scarlassara (123).
West Iron’s other two golfers, Brennan Horton and Dale Kemppainen, finished at 95 and 103, respectively.
“The young kids’ scores are moving down nicely,” Chris Thomson said.
A day earlier, the Wykon girls team got its first taste of competition, traveling along with the boys to Ontonagon for a nine-hole event. The girls finished third at 303, following team champion Houghton (254) and Hancock (295). The Wykons were led by Ava Richardson, who shot a 65, followed by Madison Berutti (67), Kya Dallavalle (81) and Harlie Melstrom (90).
“Girls first chance to get out and play this year,” Coach Thomson said. “Happy with the start.”
Nathan Thomson finished runner-up in the boys’ individual standings, shooting a 37. Horton finished at 49 and Kemppainen carded a 51.
