Last Fall the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame Executive Council announced the selection of local legend Don McDonald to the Hall of Fame. An induction ceremony posthumously recognizing McDonald’s accomplishments will take place on May 13 at the Island Resort and Casino in Harris.
McDonald was 29–10–3 while coaching football at Stambaugh High School from 1962–1967. He then spent three years at West Iron County, where he was named Upper Peninsula Coach of the Year in 1963 and had a record of 17–6–1.
Most notably, he helped steer the consolidation of Stambaugh and Iron River schools by creating a unified team which celebrated the accomplishments of players from both schools. In addition to his football success, he directed Bates High School to a Class E district basketball title in 1953.
A social hour prior to the induction ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. Central time, followed by a brief introduction and dinner to take place at 5 p.m. Central time. The main program will follow the dinner.
McDonald’s son Kevin will be accepting honors on his father’s behalf. He encouraged former players and those who recall the difference McDonald made for the local community are encouraged to attend.
Arrangements to attend can be made by contacting the Island Resort and Casino at 1-800-682-6040.
