CRYSTAL FALLS – Dave Sharp Worlds Quartet brings a world of music to the Crystal Theatre Sunday, May 7 at 2 p.m. Bassist, composer and bandleader Dave Sharp leads the Worlds Quartet in exploring music traditions from Turkey, Egypt, Ukraine, India, Bulgaria and Greece.
The Ann Arbor Observer describes the music as “a kaleidoscope of undulating gypsy, Jewish, Persian, and North African music, interspersed with jazz variations.” Building on an electric bass foundation, the unique sound is produced by violin, oud (a lute-like stringed instrument played in Arab countries), synthesizer and world percussion.
Recognized in the Jazz Times Critic’s Poll, the quartet is praised for “blending rhythms, sounds and textures from across the globe with original compositions.”
The ensemble’s new single, “Ukrainian Kolomeyke,” was released soon after the invasion of Ukraine. The tune and dance by the same name is from the Hutsul people of Ukraine.
Sharp says, “this particular tune has been a feature in our shows for years and it only seems appropriate to release it during this time.” All proceeds from the sales of the single are being donated to the Ukrainian Red Cross.
Advanced tickets for the concert may be purchased online at thecrystaltheatre.org, by phone at 906-875-3208, or in person at Stage Left (next to the theatre) 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday. All area music students with student ID will be admitted without charge as guests of Crystal Theatre.
