Due to the abundance of water and unplayable fields this spring, the Lady Trojans softball team was forced to cancel their first four games of the season. Relegated to practicing indoors and eventually having to shovel their home field clear of ice, the Trojans entered their first games having done everything they could to properly prepare — but were uncertain of what to expect.
On April 24, a full two weeks after their scheduled opener, the team officially began their second year of softball at Forest Park. Unfortunately for the Trojans’ opponent, North Dickinson, the Lady Trojans had fully utilized their two weeks of additional practice and were ready to play.
The Trojans defeated North Dickinson 12–6 and 13–3 in a double-header. The team then leveraged that momentum to take a second double-header from Rapid River, 17–2 and 22–4 on April 26.
The team has an abundance of talent both in the field and at the plate. The team generated an avalanche of runs across their four victories. Power-hitter Jessie Loehr hit a titanic home run against Rapid River. Charlie Larson came one hit short of hitting for the cycle in the team’s first game of the season. Pitcher-turned-home-run-hitter Kaidince Woollard recorded eight strikeouts against North Dickinson and hit an inside-the-park home run.
“We are feeling good about our start, but we still have areas to improve,” said head coach Kimberly Pekarek.
If improvement continues to come for the Lady Trojans, it could be a fun spring to be a fan at Forest Park.
