The West Iron Golf Team had its challenges this year, but Coach Mike Dallavalle sounded upbeat and hopeful as he looked to the future.
“We had a difficult time getting outside this year. We spent two months working indoors on the simulator and were only able to get outside beginning April 28th. The team had a challenge of staying together, but each meet saw us improve.”
Two players who warranted recognition included Senior Mason Starkey who competed all season, saw regular improvement and shot his best at the Upper Peninsula Finals, and Freshman Jared Pietila who started late for the Wykons, but was able to hit a 102 in the Finals.
After a season which saw a small, but committed group of athletes keep the track team competing for the year, an injury to Elijah Oberlin did not allow him to participate in the Upper Peninsula Championships on June 3rd. His teammates worked valiantly to pick up points, but only freshman Tanner Nordstrom was able to place.
Nordstrom placed in both the discus and shotput, earning five points for the Wykons. As the only underclassman in the top eight in discus, Nordstrom’s best of 112 feet and 6 inches was just five feet short of third place. In the shot put he finished sixth, just three feet behind second place. Nordstrom’s confidence in throwing against upperclassmen in the Upper Peninsula Championships speaks volumes about the young Wykon and should see him returning in the coming years to lead his team to greater heights.
