IRON RIVER — West Iron County Schools has teamed up with Michigan program “Meet up and Eat up” to provide free lunches for students 18 and younger as well as adults with special needs up to 26 years of age.
Jackie Sunn, the new food service director for the school, works with the head cook, Tony Kolbas and assistant cook, Jen McWethy to offer a free healthy meal to local kids and teens.
“I think it’s a really great program for the kids to take advantage of to get out and enjoy the weather and meet up with their friends to socialize,” said Sunn.
The summer lunch includes five components for each meal with a meat or meat substitute, whole grain, fruit, vegetable and milk.
The program runs until August 11, Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to noon. Interested participants can enjoy their free meal at the Stambaugh Elementary gymnasium and must consume their meal in the building.
