IRON RIVER – The West Iron District Library Board of Trustees is asking voters to consider a millage renewal of the current 1.7373 mills for a period of five years on the Feb. 27 ballot.

This renewal of the current millage, set to expire Dec. 31, would allow the library to maintain its existing level of funding. The library has had a millage in place since 1995, and it accounts for approximately 90% of its operating income, which provides operational funding for staff, programs, building maintenance, new books and more.

“The WIDL houses over 72,000 physical items for check-out, including books, puzzles, magazines, educational toys, DVDs, and more,” according to a news release.

In addition to the physical collection, digital apps Libby and Hoopla provide patrons access to e-books, audiobooks and e-magazines on the go, as well as streaming of TV shows and movies.

“The over 280 events that the WIDL offers each year provide patrons of all ages with opportunities for socialization, cultural enrichment, interactive play, and creative expression,” the release read.

Office-related tasks can be completed within the library as well, including access to the library’s computer lab; printers and fax, copy and laminating machines.

Without a voted millage, Library Director Stephanie Swenksi said the library would be unable to provide all of these services, adding that the library also serves as “a warm place to play in the coldest months of winter or a meeting place for fellow crafters getting together for conversation.”

The library serves all residents in the cities of Iron River, Caspian and Gaastra, as well as the townships of Iron River, Stambaugh and Bates.

“We hear so often that the library is the first place visitors or those relocating to our area look for when coming to town,” Swenski said.  “Each person walking through the door has a different need or reason for visiting.  We have a wide variety of services offered and knowledgeable, welcoming staff ready to assist.”
