IRON RIVER — Stephen N. Major, age 91, passed away on Friday, Aug.7, 2020, at ManorCare in Kingsford.

Stephen was on born Aug. 11, 1928, in Bates Township, the son of the late Miklos and Anna (Horvath) Major. He attended and graduated from the Iron River schools with the class of 1946. He was a United States Marine Veteran of World War II.

Stephen worked as an apprentice welder for Allis Chalmers, building generators for producing electricity. Later he was a welder for M.A. Hanna Mining Company, retiring when the Groveland Mine closed.

He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church of Iron River, the American Legion, and the Iron County Historical and Museum Society. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.

He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Rejch of Madison, Wis.; niece, Nancy; nephew, Daniel; and caregiver and friend, Camille Butsic of Iron Mountain.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his special friend, Joyce Butsic; and his sisters, Anna Major and Julia Janick.

Visitation will be held on Monday, Aug. 17 from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron River. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Iron River with Rev. Gregory Veneklase to offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Interment will be in Resthaven Cemetery in Iron River. The West Side Veterans will accord Military Rites at the graveside.
