IRON RIVER — Both the West Iron County and Forest Park golf teams opened their 2021 seasons at the Niagara Invitational, held at Oak Crest Golf Course in Norway on April 23.
The Trojans wound up with a team score of 221 to finish 12th of 15 teams which had enough golfers for a team score. West Iron County had only three golfers compete so did not figure in the team standings.
Norway won the team championship at 163, 12 strokes better than runner-up Kingsford. Northland Pines (186), Laona-Wabeno (186), and Coleman (191) rounded out the top five.
Individually, West Iron senior Nathan Thomson led county golfers with a 77. He struggled through a 41-shot front nine before recovering to shoot 36 on the back end.
“He had a tough front nine but shot even on the back once he made some adjustments,” WIC assistant coach Chris Thomson said of his son.
Two Wykon sophomores competed in their first high school matches after last year’s season was cancelled because of COVID-19. Brennan Horton carded a 104 and Dale Kemppainen shot a 108.
“I couldn’t be prouder of our two first-time golfers, who got their first taste of competitive golf,” Thomson said.
For Forest Park, Casey Siewiorek recorded a 114 to lead the Trojan contingent. Brad Stacy and Ethan Kopf came in at 116, while Hunter Loehr shot a 120 and Gabe Scarlassara finished with a 123.
