MARQUETTE — Nine recently graduated Iron County high school football players were selected to play in the 14th annual U.P. Football All-Star game scheduled for Saturday, July 31 at the Superior Dome in Marquette. The game will kick off at noon with the doors opening at 11 a.m. (both times CST).
Seven players from West Iron County will suit up for the black team, including Nolan Anderson, Bink Cline, Andy Fredrickson, Harrison Hogenmiller, Gage Larson, Colton Marcell and Nathan Thomson.
Two players from Forest Park will play in the game as well – Tommy Showers for the black team and Gabe Scarlassara for the red team.
The West Iron County coaching staff will be well represented as well. Chris Thomson will be the head coach for the black team, while Mike Berutti will serve as defensive coordinator and Jim Kralovec will coach the offensive line. Former WIC assistant coach Kevin Grundy, who recently left the district to take the head coaching position at Northland Pines, will coach the defensive backs.
The players selected as all-stars were drafted onto the two teams by the coaches.
West Iron, along with Bark River-Harris, Engadine and Stephenson, will receive donations, including all-star game equipment, practice jerseys and footballs.
The proceeds from the game will be donated to Ontonagon, St. Ignace and Sault Ste. Marie high schools.  A lottery drawing is performed to select the schools each year, and donations are made directly to the football program of those schools chosen.
