LAKE LINDEN — The individual efforts in track and field continued to impress as the Wykons participated in the Lake Linden Invitational on Thursday, May 4. Coming off a snowy start to the week, West Iron brought a full team of girls and five boys to participate in the meet. The Lady Wykons finished an impressive second overall while the boys performed admirably but were unable to place in the team results.
Although individual results for the meet were not yet posted at the time this article was filed, the girls took second overall.
We were thankful for some nice sun!” said coach Kristi Berutti.
The Wykon boys were once again led by freshman Tanner Nordstrom, who placed third in the discus with a toss of 108 feet 10 inches, and sophomore Elijah Oberlin who took second in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:19. The additional three team members all ran their best races of the year, though none were able to garner points for the team.
Nordstrom is gaining confidence as the season progresses.
“My last toss felt the best and that was my longest throw,” he said. “I’m feeling more comfortable each time I throw.”
Elijah Oberlin, one of the fastest sprinters in the area and an all-around stand-out athlete, finished second place in the 800-meter dash. “I knew I could hang with the two guys from Dollar Bay and Calumet so I just tried to keep pace and hold on,” Oberlin said.
Charlie James epitomized the effort and joy every coach nurtures in his team stating, “I loved to be able to compete and be around new people.”
While the Lady Wykons appear to be ready to make a run at returning honors to the West Iron track program, the boys will need to recruit additional runners to be able to compete for top team honors. Having a nucleus around which to build is essential. Fortunately, it is in place.
