This Spring, for the first time in many years, there will be a new tennis coach at West Iron. After the unanticipated departure of longtime coach Joe Serbantas, West Iron was put in the difficult position of having to find a tennis coach in an area more often known for snowmobiling and hunting than tennis.
As a school with a strong history of success in tennis, West Iron was hoping to find a coach to not only keep the program going, but one who could keep it competitive.
“I saw the job was posted,” stated Anderson, “It intrigued me and I was excited, but putting your hat in the ring to coach high school means you really have to be sure”. After a period of reflection and discussion with his family, Anderson decided to apply, spoke to his employer and was given the green light to seek the opportunity. “I am really grateful as their support really made the difference.”
“What people don’t always realize when you coach high school is the amount of time you have to commit not only for practices, but for matches which can take place several hours away. Having the support of your family and your employer are important.”
As the father of four and a graduate of West Iron, Anderson is the type of person who can truly make a difference. “I look back fondly on my experience as a student at West Iron. My wife and I wanted to raise our kids here and my kids have had a good experience. I want to give back and help make the district even better.”
Although this will be the first year of coaching tennis for Anderson, he has coached hockey previously, has an outstanding reputation in the community and is excited for the opportunity.
“Although I played tennis in high school, I have never coached tennis,” stated Anderson with humility. “I am a long time community member, was a police officer for fifteen years and work for the public works department.”
It is clear after just a brief conversation that Anderson’s excitement, humility and desire to do well will combine to keep the program moving in a positive direction. He is clearly the kind of person the students can look up to as one who graduated from West Iron and was successful.
“The first tennis match of the Spring will take place later this month,” stated Anderson, “We are practicing as much as possible in the gym and are looking to get outside as soon as the weather permits.”
