IRON RIVER – The Lady Wykons volleyball team bested the Trojans of Forest Park in a closely contested match between two very strong volleyball teams on Tuesday, Sept. 27.
With both the Trojans and Wykon volleyball teams playing well this year, the long-awaited showdown was a highlight of the first half of the season.  Forest Park, which won their first four matches of the season prior to falling twice, met an energetic cohesive Wykon team which knew it would have to play well to win.
The first of two matches between the teams gave the Wykons the opportunity to play on their home court. In a hard fought three set loss for the Trojans, the home court played a huge difference in the outcome.
Trojan coach Bobbi Jo Anderson knew the Wykons would be up for the game and it would be a tough match.  “Whenever we play at West Iron we know it is going to be a challenge and we are going to have to play well to win.”
With the Wykon football season recently coming to an unexpected early end, the volleyball team has picked up a lot of support from both the community and student body. The crowd at the Wykon’s Greenlund Gymnasium showed up and cheered their home team to a win.
Wykon coach Konnor Bjorkman once again expressed gratitude for the support of her team stating, ``We are getting a lot of support for our team and that is really helping us.” Taking straight sets with scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 29-25, the positive communication and can-do attitudes of the Wykons made the difference.  They are fun to watch and supportive of one another on every point.
Calli Pellizer (8 kills), Danica Shamion (7 kills), Haiden Gill (4 kills and three aces) and Kali Harty (3 kills and 13 assists), earned individual honors for the Wykons.  Coach Bjorkman gave credit to the entire team, “We have been working to be aggressive in the front row and executed very well tonight.”
