IRON RIVER – On a night slated to rally the forces of the West Iron student body, a carnival-like atmosphere permeated the gym, the bleachers were filled with hopeful high schoolers and there was a clear message the Wykons still have school spirit!
With the premier of a new mascot and the recognition of Elijah Oberlin’s record setting single game scoring record, the Wykons only needed to win their game against Forest Park to make it a perfect night.
Eric Shamion and his varsity girls took on the Forest Park Trojans and from the opening jump fed off the energy of the crowd to have one of their best nights of the year.
Though the Trojans tried to keep the score close in the opening minutes of the game, the Wykons quickly ran away with the contest.
The Wykons established a lead early and by the end of the first quarter were up 17 - 6. The Trojans, who were playing their third game of the week, could not muster their offense and fell behind at the half 33 - 11. Trojan Sophomore Lilly Post worked to stem the tide by pouring in 11 points, but Junior Wykon Danica Shamion had a career night by scoring 27 points in just 21 minutes of play.
By the end of the third quarter, the Wykons were up 47 - 18. West Iron led the scoring in the fourth quarter 15 - 9 and when the buzzer sounded, a night of celebration by an impressive home gym crowd ensued.
Forest Park coach Kim Bjork reflected on the evening, “We had a rough night tonight. We had two good games this week and couldn’t find a third one.”  While seven Trojans scored on the night, and freshman Jessie Loehr was able to pull down 11 rebounds, the team did not hit a single three and were only able to sink 16% of their shots.
The Wykons doubled up the Trojans on rebounds 44 - 22, sank four three pointers and had eight girls score on the night. In addition to a breakout night by Danica Shamion (27 points), Seanna Stine chipped in 10, Sidney Storti and Kali Harty both contributed 6 to the Wykon victory.
