Monday, April 22 the Lady Wykons laced up their running shoes and once again showed why they will be competitive at the Upper Peninsula Finals come June 1. Placing second overall, just behind Stephenson, the girls showed strong improvement in only their second meet of the season and, in the words of their Coach Kristi Berutti, “We had some good things happen, but still have room for improvement!”

Danica Shamion led the way as she placed first in the 100, 200 and 400 meters while leaping her way over the high jump bar for her fourth first. The future Central Michigan Chippewa showed no signs of slowing down as she competes in her final season for the Wykons.

Rowyn Fiszer and Seanna Stine placed first and second respectively in the 100 meter hurdles, then promptly reversed their order to win first and second in the 300 meter hurdles. The 4 by 100 meter relay team of Lily DeSousa, Lacey Shamion, Cheyenne Ritchie and Rowyn Fiszer took second, while the 4 by 800 Relay team of DeSousa, Haiden Gill, Lacey Shamion and Savannah Parker ran to a second place finish.

Sidney Storti was a strong third in the shot put, Kaylee Zimmerman second in the discus and Piper Prior second in the pole vault and third in the long jump demonstrated the Wykons’ strength in the field events.

The Wykon strength is evidenced in speed and strength. Led by an impressive Senior class and a seasoned coach. West Iron will continue to be competitive as their season picks up pace. The team’s schedule sees them competing up to three times a week for the next month.
