IRON RIVER – The Lady Wykons of West Iron split a pair of volleyball matches this past week, defeating Westwood in straight sets on Thursday, Sept. 15 and falling to Hancock in straight sets 11–25, 17–25, and 21–25 five days later.
In the matchup with Westwood, Danica Shamion continued to impress with seven kills and four aces while Kali Harty had 10 assists. While the team lost in three to Hancock, they made a strong showing against an excellent team.
Coach Konnor Bjorkman was pleased with her team’s performance as she knew Hancock would be a difficult match and the Wkyons would be forced to play with intensity. Looking forward to the cross-county rivalry with Forest Park, Bjorkman stated, “I think Hancock will force us to play at the level I know we are capable of — we need some intensity leading to our pink-out match versus Forest Park the following week.”
Team leader Calli Pellizzer continued to emphasize the importance of playing together.
“It’s all about a team effort — we play so well together and that’s what we need to win,” she said.
The sentiments were echoed by teammate Savannah Cole, who said: “I feel much more confident about our season this year since we started to work together and operate as a team.”
While the Lady Wykons are noticeably better than last year’s squad, the game against their rival Forest Park will be a true test. Forest Park remains undefeated on the season, has a great starting six and a strong bench.
