IRON RIVER – The West Iron Wykons record fell to 0–7 on the season in their latest loss. The Wykons gave it their all but fell to the Norway Knights, 57–20.
It has been a difficult season for the Wykons, who ended last season with a 1–18 record. Coach Nate Fales, who took over the team last summer, has a track record of success and the team continues their efforts through this rebuilding phase. The likes of Elijah Oberlin (17 points), Brayden Marcell (3 points) and Daniel James are holding out against an athletic culture which clearly needs to be rebuilt.
The Wykons struggled from the onset, scoring only six points in the first half and trailing by 33 at the midpoint. The Knights’ Alex Ortman was impressive in scoring 24 points and was supported by Wyatt Spade who chipped 12 and Cole Baij who added nine to the effort.
“I thought we were focused and played hard on defense,” said coach Nate Fales. “We just physically couldn’t keep up with them.”
As the team struggles to find its way, Fales is thinking about the future.
“The challenge of rebuilding the boys program is a community effort,” he said. “I really appreciate the people in our community who are working with our elementary and middle school kids, as they are the future.”
Next up for the Wykons are games against Stephenson on Jan. 18 (away) and Forest Park on Jan. 19 (away).
