IRON RIVER – On Monday, Sept. 19, the Lady Wykons finished their regular season with an outstanding 8–0 victory against the Knights of Norway. Combined with their 5–3 victory over Gwinn on the Sept. 15, the team finished its season with a respectable 5–7 and 1 record.
Given the team once stood at 1–7 and 1, its winning streak in the final stretch had coach Joe Serbentas excited for the postseason.
“It was nice to end the duel match regular season on a four-game winning streak,” he said.
On Wednesday, Sept. 21 the Wykons took fourth place at the Great Northern Championship.  While coach Serbentas was hoping for a top-three finish, he had nothing but praise for his team.
“We fought hard all season and have performed well,” he said. “In matches we haven’t won, we have been knocking at the door. I couldn’t be prouder of their efforts.”
He continued: “The Great Northern Championships, competition with all Division I schools, is a great warm-up for the U. P. Championships, which will take place next Thursday. We have reason to believe that if we play our best we can be competitive.”
Looking ahead, Serbentas praised the team’s energy.
“The seniors had a nice finish to their regular season and the GNC’s and are hungry going into the championships,” he said. “We are looking forward to the challenge ahead.”
