CRYSTAL FALLS – Trojan freshman Elsie Williams scored a season high 30 points as the Lady Trojans picked up their fifth win of the season in defeating Rapid River 67 - 28 on Feb. 14.
The Trojans looked strong from the start, opening up a 13 - 7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but stumbled in the second quarter and only took a 20 - 15 lead at the half. It appeared the Trojans were in for another close game.
Emerging from halftime, the Trojans came alive and put on one of their best quarters of basketball this season, scoring 27 points. In an uncommon feat, the team scored seven more points in the third quarter than they scored in the entire first half. Their opponent could not keep pace and Forest Park had a firm lead by the end of the third quarter 47 - 20.
Freshman point guard Elsie Williams, whose breakout night led the charge with 30 points, 8 rebounds and 7 steals, took control of the game and unselfishly shared the ball with a host of teammates who are improving each game. In addition to Williams’ offensive display, junior Lauren Kudwa and KD Woollard both were in double figures. Kudwa put down 11 while Woollard added 10.
The sure handed Williams has the team seeing a bright future. Williams’ love of the sport, ease in handling the ball and work ethic are truly paying off and are building excitement for next year. Beginning her love of the sport as early as fourth grade, she has competed on the Great Northern Elite travel team since fifth grade and honed her skills through innumerable hours in gyms throughout the midwest. While her ball handling makes her ideal to control the tempo of the game, she can also hit the three and shot 60% (3 for 5) from the arc in the win against Rapid River.
“We seem to be improving every game and we’re only going to get better from here on out,’ stated Williams when asked about the team and what she sees in the future for the Trojans.
