The West Iron boys tennis team remained undefeated after beating Iron Mountain 5–3 on May 6. In its most competitive match to date, the Wykons were victorious in first and second singles and first, second and third doubles.

“The guys played some solid tennis today against a good Iron Mountain team,” said Coach Jim Anderson. “We had to change up our doubles pairs due to an illness, but the combinations worked out well.”

A number of the matches were heatedly contested. The Wykons’ James White lost in three sets to Malakai Broersma, 2–6, 7–5, 6–3 in the longest match of the day.

“Even though he didn’t get the win, he never gave up through a hard fought match,” Anderson said.

Caleb Strom, playing at first singles, set the pace for the Wykons as he easily handled Kaden Sheldon of Iron Mountain (6–2, 6–1).

Zander Birmingham scored the other singles victory for the Wykons defeating Evan Copley (6–4, 6–3). The seesaw battle was never out of touch for the scrappy Birmingham, but he had to work for the win.

The Wykons doubles teams of Jackson Strom and Elijah Oberlin, scored a victory at second doubles (6–3,6–3). Keenan Dobson-Donati and Jackson Secord won at third doubles and Matthew Swenski and Mason Ahola finished out the scoring at fourth doubles.

“I’m very proud of the effort today. They continue to put in the time at practice and are showing good results,” Anderson said.
With two Invitational matches and a contest against Marquette on the horizon, the competition will continue to intensify as the

Wykons prepare for the Upper Peninsula Championships on May 28.
